Cling to the future.

Based on a Japanese cult manga, this 2017 film adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson was set in a near future where the human/robot distinction is blurring.

Working between two creative powerhouse teams, I designed a subtle costume to seamlessly integrate into the visual context of the film.

Fans of the Ghost universe expected the costuming of Johansson’s character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, to deliver.

Starting with the rich iconography of the original Japanese cult manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow was pivotal.

Because the production was hush hush, I had limited information about the new production and sets, leading me to contemporary fashion as an inspiration source. Next came integration of the work of VPL, created by legendary stylist, designer, and creative director Victoria Bartlett, my partner on this project.

Anchored in unfussy modernity and a neo-feminine grit, the final design blended seamlessly into the story.
